We are made of molecules. They react to each other, they have no choice. Most of the time, we know what will happen, but sometimes, it's a surprise! What if our way of playing would be like that? Without thinking but just doing because we know what we have to do...or not! In this workshops, we'll train to do. Just do. Experiment and see what happens, essentially through body movement and emotional reactions. First, we'll train to react in a predetermined way and have fun with that. And step by step, letting ourselves to be more and more free and surprised! Like a scientist, expecting anything, from a color change to an explosion!

A good improvised story should awaken interest and emotionally touch the audience. For the construction of a good story you need a good foundation: character, space and event. From there, the improvisers work so that the rhythm of the story captivates the viewer and has a very clear ending. In the workshop, we will remember the structure of the classic narrative, the way to use it in improvisation and how it leads us towards the very clear end. Everything has to do with the hero, his goal and the way to achieve it.

We are improvisers, storytelling is in our blood, but sometimes we are not sure what our story is about. In this workshop we will use the opinions of the characters and the soliloquies to discover what´s the content of our scenes. “If you were your character, in that situation, how would you feel?” Honesty and authenticity give credibility to fiction and helps improvisers to focus the theme. We´ll explore authentic ways of portraying complex characters. A compelling performance needs beauty as well as ugliness, if we only ever see good people on stage, we deny ourselves and the audience to experience the whole spectrum of human existence and the pleasure of emotional release.

As human beings, we tend to get caught up in the same kind of situations, behaviours or, some may even dare to say stories. We then spend quite some time analyzing all the factors that led us to that same spot we keep returning to. If we translate this into a performative context, as improvisers we are constantly trying to establish patterns in order to make our lives on stage easier. We embrace them, happy to have something to play with. Happy to use the safety net they bring in a scene. But! Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? As we get stuck in life we get stuck on stage. Our patterns become our frustrations and in some cases, are preventing the performer to grow and explore more. In the workshop we will strive to overcome or at least acknowledge the patterns that we bring into the group and the patterns that the group is producing as a collective. We will then try to break, transform or indulge in these patterns, celebrate them and play with them. The aim of the workshop is to give you tools on how to look for patterns on an individual and collective level.

In this workshop we will remind ourselves how to have fun being our weird selves. We will build weird and crazy characters, go to extremes, put the characters in different situations and support the other crazies while doing it. We will go weird, we will go un poco loco, we will have fun. What to think? Don't.

Stage combat is traditionally well rehearsed and choreographed, spending hours if not days on technique and action. In the world of improvised theatre, there are only split seconds and multiple minds working against that very essence of safety with combat. This workshop will take those techniques and create an overall language and skill foundation that can give you and your ensemble the ability to execute successful combat on stage while not executing each other. Starting with “hand to hand” style combat, we will focus on the theatricality and specificity of combat techniques in a fashion that can be repeated safely in the moment of an improvised scene. Depending on the location, tools available and skill of the participants; the advanced skills of sword/weapon based combat will also be covered. Symmetry, depth, perspective- all words one might associate with a painting more than an improv performance, yet these elements are what make up our world, and are what the audience sees when they watch your show. The images we present to the audience affect how they interpret our work, while the physical choreography informs everything from a character's emotional perspective, to the action of the scene itself. In this workshop, we will explore how the content of each scene can inform its physical presentation and work with levels and body positioning, distance, stagecraft and alternative performance spaces to build scenes that are vibrant, multi-dimensional and expressive. Go beyond space work to unlock the beautiful work of art inside your scene.

Initially, improvisation was primarily a tool an actor could use to be more spontaneous on stage and create solid art. As time has gone by, improv has become one of the most popular forms of theatre on and off the stage. With that shift, comes a greater number of people “performing” and “playing” on stage and forgetting the roots of theatre: acting. This workshop will bring the classic skills of the trained actor into the world of quick response theatre. Other than improv, the last scripted show you did was a middle school play? No problem. Take your performance up a notch with these professional theatre artists as they build the frame around your improvised toolkit, helping you create a show worthy of the Tony Awards.

In scene work, there are good habits and for scene work. And then there’s sabotage. Players could be doing some of their best work, when someone makes a terrible mistake that suddenly sends the scene into a doom spiral. Can you save it? Can you turn that cold lump of lead into gold? Can it be fun to practice sabotaging a scene? The answer to these questions is yes. Players will take turns doing good work, or trying to ruin the scene with secret sabotage prompts. Then we will examine what we can do in response to the saboteurs, to make it a scene still worth playing. With a long list of scene-cracking sabotage prompts, you will not only get to try your hand at a little villainy, but you’ll also get to save the day.
